A tailstock enables a CNC machine to precisely and safely process shaft-type work pieces. The tailstock is typically used to support the components via the use of a live center. A live center is a cone shaped object with a Morse taper adapter that's inserted into the tailstock. The cone portion spins on an internal ball-bearing mechanism.

For their lathes, Hardinge made solid male centers with 4C arbors and a separate dog driver that mounted on the outside of the spindle nose. I made a drawbar from solid steel bar with a knob made from a caster with a hard plastic wheel. I made an adapter and fitted a new Myford Super 7 tailstock ordered from Buck & Ryan in London.

Time was, a call to Hardinge and they would mail a free paper copy. Maybe it is online these days. There may be an operator manual for the VBS that explains the collet closer operation. I only have a sales brochure for the DSM 59 that shows the VBS on the back page. Maybe the picture of the collet, sleeve and nut will help.

Hardinge made some 5C tooling that was special for the mill, not for their lathes, but all that stuff is rare. At least the 5C collets are easy to get. That dividing head is not a Hardinge, so it may not be very well suited to the mill. It looks too big. The Hardinge dividing heads (plain or universal) were designed specifically for the mills.

Hardinge BB2V Spud, Sorry you have to sell it. You bought it from me on Ebay a few years back and it looks just as it did when I crated it. My Deckel FP1 replaced it as my small mill. I can vouch for that one. It is as clean inside as it is outside and runs great! Those mills were quite common here in Owensboro.

3028. There is no "boot" disk per se for this machine. You would need a DOS boot disk (preferably 6.20) and the three DOS disks and the software backup disk.
