In my configuration, each motor (X,Y,Z) has its own individual board operating the step and dir from the parallel port. However, my initial goal was to build a hot wire cnc cutter. Now that I want to do it, I read that both X and Y axis operate with two motors each. It is also referred as "one of the motors is slaved".
Mach is configured so that the A axis is slaved to the X axis. However, when homing I do NOT have the checkbox checked that says "home slave with master axis". This allows each side of the gantry to find its own prox sensor independently and then after the homing routine the slave becomes a slave of X.
It sounds like you can just switch the cables. Plug the X cable into the Y socket, and the Y cable into the X socket. Any moves down what used to be the X direction will now go down the Y direction and the old Y direction will become the new X direction. Re: Mach3 Slave Axis problem. If you only have one switch, Mach3 won't square the gantry. If the two sides are moving different amounts, then make sure the homing speed for both axis is the same. If they are the same, and it's going out of square while homing, then yes, two switches should help.
